"instinct is to answer the questions that are asked, but consultants day don't. >> you're still answering my questions, but most of the time you want to be delivering your message. >> they say sarah palin was good at that. >> governor palin answered the questions in her debate on her terms. >> governor palin, is that so? >> that's not so, but because that's a quick answer i want to talk about my record on energy. >> she was able to pivot most of the questions on to ground that she was comfortable in handling the questions on. >> they kept grilling me. >> do you believe college is stu

. shoe so you are not going to wait for the fbi then, senator? >> no. and i'm a signatory on the letter. i wanted to make this clear, geraldo. we voted in the committee on the 18th of september to send the letter. it was not sent until the 27th. between the 18th and 27th the information came out about the diary that is when senator corker of tennessee and myself sent the letter asking for the communiques. we believe if chris stevens' diary is correct he sent information to the administration and shelling and they failedsmith failed to to do what they should have done to protect the ambassador. >> can this affect the vote turnout and total in florida? >> i think so. when you look at the bush administration, a moment was katrina. when the american people thought that the administration was not properly handling katrina. this so me is potentially much more serious and much more devastating because not only is it -- it is either total incompetentence or worse so i don't know which you want to call it. say that they were totally incompetent and didn't know what it was and one person wasn't s

that the attack was an attack of terror. by the way, senator corker, he questions why f.b.i. agents haven't been able to get to that country. their excuse is it's too unsafe and bad news on the ground. why did we not know that earlier and why didn't ambassadorsteins have protection? >> dana: when you -- you have been following this, i know very closely. >> greg: absolutely. all i've been thinking about it. >> dana: is everything clear as mud at this point? gues >> greg: billy carter handled it better. you remember his fray in politics into libya. you can learn a lot about somebody through the acquaintance it. obama hired more bozeo than barnum bailey. maybe al-qaeda was opening up for siegfried and roy in vegas. that san explanation. but he cares more -- this statement he made means he cares more about winning the presidency than being president. >> bob: did anybody here call for colin powell's resignation when he went before the u.n. with clearly doctored evidence -- he didn't know it was doctored. that got us in the war in iraq? >> dana: i think he would disagree with that. >> bob: he does not

is restricted solely to benghazi. >> f.b.i. agents only today made their first for ainto the consulate compound, almost a month after the attacks and escorted by u.s. military personnel. >> we've not been sitting around waiting for information to come to us. we've been actively chasing leads in various ways. >> earlier this week, the "washington post" published sensitive papers that a reporter retrieved from the consulate grounds, including an hourly schedule for ambassador steves for the day he died. >> frankly, none of us was surprised to see them at the site. >> fox news learned security aides to president obama and intelligence officials remained divided longer than has been disclosed about how to characterize the benghazi attacking to the public. the team made a secret finding of terrorism by september 1, so it could use a 2001 antiterrorism statute to move around more freely men, and material. yet the debate continued and intensified once soup rice made the sunday show rounds to say it was the result of a spontaneous mob. >> we don't see signs this was a coordinated plan, remeditated atta

of f.b.i. experts? >> yeah. at a time when most americans would want to rally, instead, we've had this bizarre response, which only leads me to believe either number one, there was gross negligence or imcompetence involved. or this administration doesn't want all of us to realize that libya may now be a failed state if the f.b.i. agents who are well trained can't even make it into benghazi. when you look at that narrative, with the backdrop of in afghanistan we have afghans that we are partnering with killing americans. we have now iranians flying in iraqi air space over iraq to syria to deliver arms. you have a situation where iran now believes we're a nation in decline and therefore, they're going ahead with uranium enrichment. you look at russia who apparently is waiting until after this election to start talking about watering down our missile defense. this administration has weakened our nation tremendously through the huge debts we've run up over the last three or four years. and the fact is, i don't know whether it's that narrative they're trying to stay away from or there

in fbi agents to investigate because they say benghazi is unstable. if that's the case, then where was the security before the attack? >> there are a lot of republican complaints in terms of liberal bias about this media campaign. some more credible than others. the president has mostly been covered as a candidate rather than as an incumbent whose record needs to be scrutinized. this is an area where there are questions, dealing with security overseas and also what are our goals in libya and are they being achieved in the right way? that line of argument and attack with press scrutiny and mitt romney making the case should be part of the debate. and i think will be because this story does have a lot of unanswered questions. >> mika, as we've been saying for some time both on and off the air, if the president was george w. bush and he had said that the middle east going up in flames was a, quote, bump in the road, george w. bush would have been absolutely skewered by the press. >> at the same time, is it fair to say that the romney campaign and mitt romney himself have seized upon t

. that was because authorities say it was stolen more than 60 years ago. the fbi is trying to find out who pilfered that piece. >>> and the pet cemetery in a new york city suburb has become the first animal burial ground to be listed on the national register of historic places. the hartsdale cemetery is being recognized for its architect and social history. those are your top five headlines. >>> president obama and mitt romney will finally be facing each other in an arena that has seen some of the best and worst performances from our presidential candidates and their running mates. >> there is no soviet domination of eastern europe and there never will be under a ford administration. >> there you go again. are you better off than you were four years ago? >> senator, you're no jack kennedy. >> who am i? why am i here? >> that last one went on to "snl" infamy. joining me is nbc news historian and author michael, in the eyes of the voters what is it that wins the debate? is it one great line some of which we just played or a steady argument for your positions? >> a great line can help. for instance, a

on two ways. i got access to the f.b.i. agents who were in dallas who were say signed by hoover to the case. they've never talked to anybody. so we have all fresh stuff there. and the second thing is, we pinpoints where had jfk changed. he changed dramatically, the death of his baby patrick. i spend a lot of time on that in the book. on before he was one way, after his baby died, he was another way. it's fascinating. everybody remembers if you're alive back then where you were when kennedy was killed. i open the book, i was at high school on long island. it came overt loud speaker. my maternal grandmother, winifred kennedy. very emotional book for me. very happy with it. if you read this book, you will be entertained and you will be informed, no doubt. >> brian: one question you can't answer, could you tell us now when you close the book, you hand it to the publisher and you said, i still don't have the answer to that question? >> yeah. there's a guy named george demornshield, a shadowy guy and he's swirling around lee harvey oswald. he's a loser. no way this guy should be swirl

to have the information. there is investigation by the fbi as to what happened in benghazi. and there's a review answering some of the questions asked. but how can you ask the secretary to come before the information is known? it's also important to note that the republican appropriation in congress gave the administration $300 million less than it asked for for the state department including funding for security. >> are you suggesting that there was a financial aspect to what happened in benghazi, libya? that the u.s. didn't have enough money to protect american diplomats? >> no. what i'm saying is congress has the right of oversight, but it also has the power of the purse. so as it looks to what the fundamentals are here, we have to know -- nobody's going to know by next week, but we have to have a full investigation and accountability for it. but we also have to look to ourselves in terms of that funding question, $300 million less than the administration asked for. >> and we know the state department, the secretary has asked thomas pickering to launch this full scale investigation
